Envision a cultural storm in America, a force with the potential to unravel America by manipulating our core institutions. Unlike a natural disaster like Hurricane Katrina, which brought death and property destruction, this storm has the potential of unraveling America.
Although Hurricane Katrina’s progress and direction were carefully monitored and predicted, fatal preparation flaws contributed to the damage caused by the hurricane-force winds. The unraveling of America’s culture is more subtle, but America’s lack of proper preparation to offset the manipulations of our core institutions will have significant consequences.
This post will simply introduce the fundamentals of the unraveling of America’s culture. In future posts, the instigator and expected outcome will be identified; this will help us understand the contributing factors and enable us to analyze the ideas used to influence the outcome and the reasons behind them. Additionally, the situations and causes behind the deterioration and unraveling of each identified institution will be discussed.
It’s tough to stay positive amid increasing reports of our culture being changed through violent crimes, political corruption, increase in unpunished thefts, divisive nature of race relations, the increasing presence of socialism and complex issues like gender, inflation, and immigration. The attack on free speech and discrimination against people of faith are further issues that are troubling. Some people also believe that our public schools have become centers of indoctrination. These complex issues require careful consideration. It’s understandable to feel overwhelmed and powerless in the face of these challenges. These conflicts are becoming more common and slowly eroding an essential part of our way of life. The future our descendants may inherit is a concern, as the idea of significant changes in peaceful, stable, and prosperous American culture is alarming. We must consider the impact on future generations and our responsibility to preserve our way of life.
Gerard Baker, Chief Editor for The Wall Street Journal moved from England to America with his family and has had the chance to observe and experience the cultural transformations taking place in the country. In his Book American Breakdown, he notes that he noticed America changing from what it used to be into what it is becoming. “As I reflected on the steadily growing rot in the American project, it became clear that a common factor lay behind the national breakdown. Trust, the essential central bond that holds society together, was unraveling. Americans were not simply divided against one another, disappointed in the failures of success at governments and losing faith in the country’s ability to meet its challenges. Something much more corrosive was at work. The fundamental elements that form the basis of our functional society have existed for over two centuries. Unfortunately, these elements are being manipulated and unduly influenced. The manipulations can lead to the disintegration of our culture and society, the weakening of governing institutions, and the faltering of power and economic relationships. In the United States, this decline has been ongoing for several decades and has reached a critical point. Trust in all institutions, including the pillars of American democracy and society, is unraveling.
The deliberate effort to manipulate and influence America’s fundamental institutions and cultural pillars is a matter of grave concern as it indicates a clear erosion of the values that form the bedrock of our society. This manipulation and influence can be seen in how powerful interests have co-opted our cultural institutions, how a handful of corporations control our media, how our education system has been politicized, and how special interests increasingly influence our government. The consequences of this manipulation and influence are far-reaching and threaten to undermine the very foundations of our democracy.
